  2. What is the point in this, hardly a “competition”. Another way of getting good snappers to give away their best pictures for use as per “By submitting your work to Fotoblur, you grant us the ability to show it on the web, print it in our publications, and/or use it for promotional material.”
So its a bit like an Oxfam / Charity (UK) or Thrift shop (USA) where the shop is given its content for free by the public, The raw material costs nothing and they sell it and make money. Does this a magazine get its raw material for free and sell the magazine and make money that way? At $16.20 per issue. I cannot see any hint of payment to the photographer. What is the circulation of this magazine? Even at a print run of 5,000 per month racks up sales of $70,000 plus, assuming all sold. Rack that up into 12 months sales and you could have upwards of $750,000 turnover and assuming even 30% profit not bad when your raw material is free. It is like the man who realised he could make dry ice by removing carbon dioxide from the air..his raw materials were free.
I am unable to survive and eat on photo credits what I want is payment for the use of the image.
There is an interesting discussion at http://photo.net/business-photography-forum/00Tvs9 on this subject.
Some of you may love the kudos this brings but why would I want to give free stuff for other photographers to see? I want clients to see my work and buy my images with real money.
You may well be content to see your picture in a printed magazine and show friends and relatives but I have moved away from the free picture concept a long time ago. I certainly will not be submitting unless some form of fee changes hands and helps me keep the wolf from the door. For those of you who have a hobby in photography then go ahead but I cannot imagine working photographers getting into bed with this magazine unless they are paid.

  3. Well said, don’t get fooled

  4. Hey Peter,

Do a little research! Do a pricing at Mag cloud” that is where this magazine is printed. You will Learn that it is print on demand. Which means it probably cost 15 dollars to print. They do do make anything on sales and who do you think is going to want to buy a copy? The 30 or so photographer that are in the issue? That’s probably about 33 bucks. Also how much money do think it cost build a website like that? Is is free? is the server disk space free? Is the time free to do the layout and answer on-line questions is time free?. I know this because have done RESEARCH ON my illustration magazine and spent a lot of time doing it. If this magazine every made any real profit, then great for them because it will be years in the making. Its function is only for fun a recognition….So … What is free! Is that you get to play on a someones website and show of your work!.. Get REAL!

  6. Not to sound sour, but, their email and this page says “as many entries as you want”… “free”… “high resolution”… Specifically: Submit your photo as a 300dpi jpg file. Save your image so that the width is 7 inches (7″ @ 300dpi = 2100px). Allow the height to proportion itself naturally. We ask that you submit your images in high (80 - 100%) quality. Please keep the file size below 5 MB.

I went through the process but can only submit 1 photo a day… can not be bigger than 512Kb… and when I kept my photo at 300 DPI it didn’t fit the requirements, so I had to reduce it to 120 DPI. Now my gorgeous 5MB photo is 130K and that’s the only one I can send to the magazine!

Something is wrong here… This certainly isn’t a “CONTEST”! For me, I think I’ll stay with WEBSHOTS for “public viewing of my photos”…
