  1. I sometimes feel these competitions are more to accumulate a royalty free library than the results. Saying that it does give the contestants recognition and an outlet for their work, so in balance a fair trade.

  2. I feel these contests are a bit unfair seeming to limit most of them to only contestants in the U.K. only. I will be unsubscribing from this website.

  3. It just happened that recent contests were for the UK. I am sure there will be international ones or for other countries including the US.

  4. Do not take umbrage on the UK resident bit. I often see “US only competitions” or “US residents only”. It may restrict it ,but hey!!! it is a competition and they can make up the rules as they see fit. It may be that the charity is UK based and may have constitutional rules about things like competitions and its sphere of activity. I know you may not meet the rules and have a cracking image but if you look at the prizes what do you see? Apart from the software, they are only of use to people who live in the UK. I doubt they want to post magazines to the US and be responsible for international travel.

Clearly this rule on copyright: “Copyright: By entering the competition, you agree to grant the Lymphoma Association a royalty-free, non-exclusive license to publish and otherwise use the submitted photo(s) as we wish, including leaflets and newsletters.”
is like a number of clever websites out there who happily freely host your pictures for critique and display but in the small print they have taken your pictures to use for free however they want. Neither option can be any good to photography and one must always beware of entering without careful consideration as to what becomes of your submitted (not winning) images and copyright. I am NOT entering because of the copyright issues, I have had too many pictures stolen in the past.
Perhaps the organisers should look at this aspect of the rules. At the end of the day the prizes are not that mindblowing………………………………………………….

  5. Peter, thank you for such a wise comment! I agree withyou 100%.
