Don’t give away your work! Avoid these type of contests!
Marty, I respect your opnion. However if someone wants to gain experience in contests and he/she is fully aware of the copyright policy before entering, I think it is a valid option.
this is a great informative blog
I think the reason for this contest is to raise funds and awareness for St. Jude; allowing parents and family members to express their passion for this organization by posting a family photo of their loved ones. I don’t think the copyright rules need to be worried about too much.
I am happy that PNY is supporting such a great cause and has found a creative and fun way to allow their consumers; from photo enthusiasts to amateurs; to show their support. I joined the competition and have gotten my friends to vote and donate to support the children.
I’m all for good causes but I’m not going to just sign all rights away to my work just by submitting it to this contest. There is no way any artist should agree to this copyright unless well compensated and here you are expected to give up all rights just by submitting? You don’t even have to be the winner. That is rediculous. and they must be tripping.

That is pretty greedy and very disrespectful of the photographer’s rights. Insulting and abusive, regardless of what or who the organization represents, it is unaccaptable. They can easily support whatever causes without stripping the photographers basic rights. Simply disgusting.
I understand why they’re asking for all rights but they’re asking for trouble. I note with interest that nowhere do they have any requirements that images of individuals be fully model released. They want the photographers to transfer rights that they might not themselves possess and they make no allowance for that.
This seems to me to be a poorly conceived, poorly backed contest.
Be weary of this contest. It sounds like a great deal, but if your photo wins, you can no longer use that photograph ever for any reason. You give up ownership of it entirely. That, in my opinion, is totally unacceptable.
